Back in 2002, the CEO of PLANT-MY-TREE® Sören Brüntgens bought his first plot of land in Germany and planted 2,000 trees. Almost two decades later, this initiative has grown to 100 planting sites across Germany and Serbia, where over 2 million trees have been planted. This is the story of PLANT-MY-TREE®, one that will continue with Open Forest Protocol as the organization looks toward the future with ready coffers, not of gold or silver but something far more valuable: trees and the carbon they sequester.
Daniel from PLANT-MY-TREE responded to our inquiry to feature the forest project with enthusiasm, sending the team a video from the ground in Germany where he explains the ethos of PLANT-MY-TREE®. Its foundation acquires various natural areas such as forests, moors and meadows. The afforested plots are developed into healthy mixed forests that are preserved indefinitely, and in this way, they create, expand and protect vital habitats for plants, insects and animals for the nature of tomorrow.
Projects they are pioneering with Open Forest Protocol include Havetoft, located in the north of Germany near Denmark, Jünkerath in the west of Germany, and Gross Lindow in the east of Germany near Poland. The PLANT-MY-TREE® team has already witnessed increased healthy biodiversity when measuring the trees last month in Havetoft, reporting geese, mice, spiders and even bees that wanted to land on their hands while they were measuring the tree heights. Planting has been accomplished by staff and with the help of Thomsen, a local car garage. As a project designed to generate carbon credits, stakeholders include buyers and locals who live nearby that will benefit from robust ecosystems.
“The site opposite ours belongs to a Christmas tree plantation owner. He told us that he wanted to buy our plot of land as well. At first, he was disappointed not to get it, but seeing the progress of our project now, he is amazed and happy that we aim for a lasting forest.”
The logistics of measuring the growing trees for data uploads and the increasingly dry heat of summer have been the project's largest challenges so far. The team plans to water the sites and contract local foresters for regular monitoring. Strategically planned visits to the forest plots as well as consultation with the OFP team is helping the afforestation areas grow healthy and strong.
PLANT-MY-TREE® found Open Forest Protocol while on the hunt for legitimate carbon crediting standards that promote increased transparency while maintaining ease and accessibility of processes.
“We searched for different options and came across OFP. We like the easy and transparent approach. With no upfront costs for the registration, we decided to work with OFP. It gives us the opportunity and the tools to measure and track the growth of our trees and spares us a lot of documentation. With the help of OFP, our stakeholders can easily find the project and monitor its development online. Open Forest Protocol is PLANT-MY-TREE’s® stepping stone to present its projects in Germany and Serbia to an international audience.”- Daniel, PLANT-MY-TREE®
Looking forward, PLANT-MY-TREE® expects the projects to become forests that the future generations of the local community can enjoy. In our email exchange, Daniel shared that people often marvel at forests with trees that are over 100 years of age. But for them, 100 years is the bare minimum.
